Overview
The communities in the holiday region of the Ahrntal Valley (Mühlwald, Sand in Taufers, Ahrntal, Prettau) are constantly working hard on their climate protection plans. This can be seen and is confirmed among other things by the receipt of the European Energy Award and the Bandiera Arancione.
Sand in Taufers & Ahrntal Climate Communities

European Energy Award for energy-efficient and environmentally-friendly action

Alongside the provincial capital of Bolzano, Sand in Taufers is the only community in South Tyrol to have been awarded the international “Gold Climate Community” certification. Under the mantle of the European initiative, the European Energy Award is conferred upon communities that show extraordinary commitment in the areas of energy-efficiency and climate protection. Ahrntal, like other communities in South Tyrol, is following the pilot community of Sand in Taufers with the aim of increasing the quality of life of everyone over the long term. This can be felt most directly in lower energy costs and, seen over the long term, in cleaner and more intact natural surroundings. Furthermore, the measures contribute to worldwide climate protection and help to achieve the 17 sustainable development goals of the United Nations. Through an intelligent energy plan, the community has already succeeded in producing far more energy than it consumes overall.

The European Energy Award

The European Energy Award is an international quality management and certification tool for municipal climate protection, in which at present 18 countries and more than 1,800 communities with over 77 million citizens are taking part. An award is conferred if a community implements more than 50 per cent of all possible measures to improve energy efficiency, ensure supply with renewable energies and for climate protection. If a community goes so far as to implement more than 75 per cent of all possible energy and climate-related measures, it is recognised with the Gold European Energy Award.
